If you had asked me back in 2017 when I started making podcasts if you could make a show that is as impactful, meaningful and emotive remotely as you could in person then I would have said absolutely not. And, to an extent, I still hold that belief to be true BUT you can get close to the full power of pod-making even via key online systems.

Let’s have a look at why remote recordings actually offer several benefits:

Flexibility: Remote podcast recording allows hosts and guests to participate from anywhere in the world. It eliminates the need for physical presence in a studio, making it easier to coordinate schedules and reach a wider pool of potential guests. The schedule point might seem like a small issue… until you actually start trying to book guests and then you’ll realise what a complete ball-ache it can be to streamline multiple people’s diaries!

Convenience: Participants can record the podcast from the comfort of their own homes or offices, eliminating the need for travel or commuting. This convenience can save time and resources, making it easier to schedule interviews or discussions with busy individuals. Again, this might sound like a super-basic admin waffle, but making it easy for guests to appear will have a surprisingly positive impact on the people you can secure for your show.

Improved audio quality: There are now a number of great platforms online with high-quality audio recording capabilities, allowing each participant to record their audio locally. This eliminates the issues associated with poor internet connections or low-quality microphones, resulting in better sound quality for the podcast. And, by the way, if you think these platforms are too techy to use so you opt for Zoom instead then we must stop being friends immediately!

Separately recorded tracks: Online platforms now have the ability to capture each participant’s audio (and video on certain sites) on separate tracks. This feature is particularly useful during editing and post-production as it allows for individual track adjustments, noise reduction, and balancing audio levels. It ensures that each participant’s recording is clear and distinct, contributing to a professional-sounding podcast. The individual video files also give you the ability to make high-quality marketing assets like trailers, clips Instagram Reels, TikTok video and YouTube Shorts. And, if you are not making those sorts of assets you are missing a trick, big time. The biggest issue I see with podcasters not maximising their reach is a lack of promotional materials that drive awareness and traffic to their content.

Backup and reliability: Remote recording platforms often have built-in backup systems that save the audio locally on each participant’s device in addition to the cloud storage. This redundancy helps minimize the risk of data loss due to technical issues or connectivity problems.

Enhanced engagement: Remote podcast recording platforms often offer video capabilities, allowing participants to see each other during the conversation. This visual element can enhance engagement and non-verbal communication between hosts and guests, contributing to a more interactive and dynamic podcast experience. Plus, as mentioned above the video is also going to be your №1 marketing asset and promotional tool for the podcast.

Easy integration with editing software: Many remote recording platforms provide integrations with popular podcast editing software. This simplifies the process of importing and syncing individual audio tracks, facilitating post-production and editing workflows. For example, we have moved the majority of our clients onto a platform called Riverside — due to how the site works the Phonic team can download ‘project’ files directly into our professional-grade production software (Premier Pro for those who care!) This might sound like a small benefit, but it actually saves loads of time to download and re-upload files.

Overall, remote podcast recording platforms offer convenience, high-quality audio, flexible scheduling, and improved editing capabilities, making it easier to produce professional podcasts with engaging content.
